The First part of experiences was simple enough. Bojl took very long bent glass tube and has poured in it mercury so in a short shoot there was locked a small volume of air. The length of an air column served as a measure of its volume. Mercury level in both shoots originally was identical.

Then Bojl has started to add mercury in a long shoot while air volume has not decreased twice, and to the big pleasure has noticed that the difference between both levels of mercury is approximately equal to barometric pressure. It suggested about inverse relationship between pressure and volume; for reception of this dependence of Bojl has repeated experiment, adding mercury in the small portions, and the data obtained by him completely has confirmed such dependence.

Bojl understood, however, that it is necessary to make experiment and in the field of pressure below atmospheric, and more difficult equipment for this purpose was required. He has taken the call in the length about two metres and has placed it in wider tube filled with mercury. Heating up and cooling an internal tube, Bojl has involved in it mercury, and finally in the top part of a tube there was the small volume occupied with air. Then it gradually lifted an internal tube so that pressure in it went down, and again measured pressure and volume.
